The short version: you can read everything without telling us anything. If you make an account, we keep your email address, your bookmarks and your place in each book, and nothing else. We never sell it, and we never give it to advertisers.
This site is run by Neo Chou (“we”, “us”). This policy covers b-side-you.pages.dev and explains what information is involved when you read here, make an account, or see ads.
If you just read
You don’t need an account to read any book. While you read, the site saves a few small things in your browser’s own storage (called local storage), on your device only:
- which book and chapter you’re on, and the paragraph you reached, so “Continue reading” works
- which chapters you’ve finished
- your text size and light or dark theme
This stays in your browser. We can’t see it. You can delete it at any time by clearing this site’s data in your browser settings. If your browser blocks storage (for example in private browsing), the site still works; it just won’t remember your place.
If you make an account
Accounts are optional and only for people 13 and older. When you make one, we store:
- your email address
- the date the account was made, and that you confirmed you’re 13 or older
- your place in each book (book, chapter, paragraph, and when it was saved)
- the chapters you’ve finished
- your bookmarks (book, chapter, paragraph, the first few words of it, and the date)
We use this only to show you your bookmarks and keep your place in sync between your devices. We don’t ask for your name, and if you sign in with Google we don’t store the name or picture Google sends. We don’t send newsletters or marketing email. The only email you’ll get from us is the sign-in link you ask for.
Account data is stored with Supabase, a database provider, on servers that may be outside your country. Database rules make sure an account can only read and change its own bookmarks and progress. Nobody else who uses the site can see anything about you, and there are no public profiles.
Deleting your account
Go to Account and choose Delete account. That removes your email address, bookmarks and progress from our database straight away. Copies can remain in our provider’s encrypted backups for up to 30 days before they’re gone for good. You can also download everything we hold about you from the same page, as a file.
Ads and cookies
The site shows display ads from Google AdSense to pay for hosting. Ads only appear in a few fixed spots outside the story, and only once they’re switched on.
Google and its partners may use cookies and similar technology to show ads, to limit how often you see the same one, to measure them, and to stop fraud. Depending on where you are and what you agree to, those ads may be personalised based on your visits to this and other sites. You can manage this at Google’s ad settings and read how Google uses information from sites that use its services at policies.google.com.
If you’re in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you’ll be asked for your consent first, through a message provided by Google. If you don’t agree, ads that do appear are not personalised. You can change your choice at any time from the link in that message.
Because many readers are teenagers, we block ad categories that aren’t suitable for them, such as dating, gambling and alcohol.
Your account data is never shared with ad networks or used to choose ads.
Analytics and logs
We don’t run analytics or tracking scripts of our own. Like every website, our hosting provider keeps short-lived technical logs (such as IP address, browser type and the page requested) to deliver pages and protect the site from abuse. The fonts are served from this site, not from a third party.
Children
Anyone can read without an account. Accounts are for people 13 and older, and we ask you to confirm that before one is made. If you believe someone under 13 has made an account, contact us and we’ll delete it.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, including under the EU and UK GDPR and Taiwan’s Personal Data Protection Act, you have the right to see the personal data we hold about you, correct it, take a copy, and have it deleted. Most of this you can do yourself on the Account page. For anything else, email the address on the About page. If you’re in the EU or UK you can also complain to your local data protection authority.
We rely on your request to provide the account (to show your bookmarks and progress), and on your consent, where it’s required, for personalised ads.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that matters, we’ll update the date at the top and say so on the site.
